Personal Story:
This project began in 2009 as a retirement project for myself after spending nearly 30 years in the heating and construction industry I wanted to apply the knowledge gained into my own property. My wife and I wanted a bungalow with land that we could upgrade and make as energy efficient as reasonably possible. With the land there is the bonus of our own fresh fruit and veg !! We are now in our eighth year of the project and the end is in sight. We only found out about Superhomes after we were six years into the project and had learned everything the hard way. With existing knowledge and the knowledge gained we are more than happy to chat or meet with people considering the same plan.
Motivations:
Both my wife and I anticipate that energy prices will only go up along with other costs. Our motivation for this project was to reduce the overall running cost of the house without loosing the comfort.
Property:
Our property consists of two sections, one the original lodge (1778) and an attached self build for the 1980’s. Our interest in the property was for the condition (required full refurbishment) the space to extend and land to make into fruit and veg area.
Measures:
The changes made to the property are all around energy in one form or another. The key changes have been to reduce the heat loss through poor insulation, maximising use of solar energy, storage of water for the garden, utilising as many energy saving appliances as possible
Benefits:
1) Energy Bills Reduced
2) Water Bills Reduced
3) Reduced Levels Of Condensation With Mechanical Heat Recovery
4) Fantastic Fruit & Veg using stored water with (everything from leaves to bird poo is going into the tank)
5) Payment From The Government For The Solar PV System
Favourite Feature:
The Intelligent Immersion I3 Switch That Controls The Energy Generated By The Solar PV System & Can Be Monitored Over The Internet. The Unit Monitors The Main Supply and Once The System Is Generating A Surplus The I3 Switch Starts To Load Up A Selected Resistive Load.
We Have Three Radiators With Electric Elements Fitted & A Heater Battery In The Heat Recovery Unit All Operated By The Intelligent Immersion I3 Switch.
