About

Winchester Area SuperHomes was set up by Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC) and the National Energy Foundation’s SuperHomes project to create a Whole House Retrofit Service for homeowners in the Winchester District

Winchester Action on Climate Change is a registered charity that has been taking action on climate change since 2008.  For this project, we are working in partnership with the National Energy Foundation, a national charity that has been working on energy sustainability for over 30 years.

Together, we want to help homeowners across Winchester District reduce their homes’ carbon footprint, by providing detailed independent advice.

The two year project is funded by the Energy Redress Scheme (managed by the Energy Saving Trust on behalf of Ofgem).

Who We Are

The Winchester Area SuperHomes project will work with 150 homeowners who are interested in creating a more sustainable property and provide them with a Whole House Retrofit Plan.  This will set out a detailed, tailored blueprint of the most suitable and effective improvement options for their property and lifestyle.

Winchester Area SuperHomes can help you to transform the energy performance of your home to reduce your carbon footprint, by retrofitting.  Retrofitting means changing your property so that it uses less energy and has lower carbon heating.  For example, by improving insulation and installing a heat pump.  A Whole House Retrofit Plan will show you exactly what you can do to retrofit your home, detailing predicted costs, carbon savings and cost savings.

We know that the home retrofit process from design through to completion can be a daunting process to navigate and a significant investment, so we will support and guide homeowners through their retrofit journey.

What's the project?

Energy use in the home is responsible for around 20% of direct carbon emissions – if each of us takes action to reduce our own carbon footprint, together we will make a huge difference to tackling the climate emergency.

Winchester Area SuperHomes supports homeowners to reduce their own carbon emissions and also to use those experiences to create case studies that show other people how it can be done.  We want to create a network of energy efficient properties benefitting from knowledge exchange and the sharing of expertise.  Projects like this will be essential in driving the large-scale transformation of homes, which is urgently needed to help us on the path to achieving a net zero UK by 2050.

Why now?

By registering with Winchester Area SuperHomes, you’ll receive:

  • access to qualified and accredited professionals
  • support to check eligibility and apply for grants
  • subsidies for low and middle income homeowners
  • technical back up from the National Energy Foundation
  • direct support from Winchester Area SuperHomes Project Officer

As part of the project you’ll also receive free SuperHomes Network membership for one year which will entitle you to free entry to networking and knowledge sharing events from other residents and industry experts.

“Imagine a time when

every rooftop in the world

has a solar panel on it.

Looking at Google Earth,

all the rooftops you see

would have panels. Panels

would provide power or

heat, or both.”

Objectives

WinACC is a small charity with a big ambition – helping Winchester become a net-zero carbon district. Through this project we wanted to bring people together in the Winchester district to respond to the climate crisis and create positive, sustainable change. NEF’s SuperHomes project is a rapidly expanding network of energy-aware members who are redefining green living to create a positive change for the benefit of our planet and their own health and comfort. We share these aims and objectives for Winchester Area Superhomes:

01. Happier Homes

We delivered 150 Whole House Plans starting the retrofit journey to improve home energy efficiency, reduce running costs, and create healthier more comfortable households.

02. Healthier Planet

The retrofitted homes will collectively slash carbon dioxide emissions by thousands of tonnes through measures tailored to the individual home.

03. Creating Community

The energy efficient homes will inspire others on their retrofit journey through peer to peer learning between existing and future customers of the service.

04. Job Creation

Winchester Area SuperHomes empowered local workers by subsidising suitably qualified professionals to become Retrofit Coordinators. In addition, there is support for contractors to gain Trustmark accreditation for installation work. PASH is supported by generous funding for these aims.

05. Future Insight

We also researched the best ways to encourage more people to retrofit their properties.  We looked at how retrofit can improve property values and found out when are the best times to carry it out.

Meet the Team

Winchester Area SuperHomes is brought to you by a team of dedicated and experienced volunteers and professionals who are committed to helping you start your home retrofit and are on hand throughout the process to offer guidance and support.

We must demand all sorts of changes from Government, but we must rely on owner-occupiers individually to stop burning oil and gas to make energy for their own homes.

Funding

We understood that home retrofit can be a daunting task, but through internal funding and government grant schemes there was help available to ensure you can install the most effective measures on your home.

WinAcc 14 Site

Upon the closure of the project, £122,171.17 out of the £125,000.00 capital grant funding was spent between January 2023 and October 2023 helping  46 distinct households on their journey to home retrofit.

These retrofitted homes will lead the way locally in demonstrating how existing homes can be made more sustainable and the host of benefits this brings to owners.

Become a SuperHome

Customers who have received a Whole House Retrofit Plan were encouraged to proceed with an assessment of their proposed retrofit project against the SuperHomes Rating Scheme developed by NEF which provides a benchmark of refurbishment excellence. Once installation work had been completed, the performance in terms of home energy use and comfort is monitored and evaluated. This leads to properties becoming certified as a SuperHome according to a one to five-star rating, with five star representing an exemplar zero carbon home that offers maximum comfort. Find out more about the SuperHomes Rating Scheme here.

“It’s through local home-grown community projects that we will start seeing real change. By learning from others actions and influencing those around us, we will have the most impact.”
